A closer look at Capella Ubud

Twenty two one-bedroom tents and one two-bedroom lodge at Keliki in Bali, operated by Capella Hotel Group and designed by Bensley. The architect publishes that the brief was scaled down so that no tree was cut during construction, and that full-size bamboo mockups were built on site to set each tent against the existing trees and views. A 2018 first look describes the tents as built around palm and banyan trees, sometimes incorporating them. Guests sleep inside canvas walls, and the property says so on its accommodation page, which publishes that the sounds of nature are audible from dusk till dawn. The camp announced EarthCheck Gold in December 2024, recorded here as a held standard that moves no score.

The architect publishes teak floors in every tent, handmade in Central Java, and the property publishes a copper bathtub with indoor and outdoor showers in each one-bedroom tent, Bamford toiletries, and a private deck and pool with a forest or valley outlook. Canvas is named as the wall material by the property, the architect and the press, and no fabric, coating or manufacturer is named for it. A reviewer in 2025 describes triple-layered curtains with a blackout layer, which is the only account of blackout and comes from a guest rather than the property, and the same review reports that the canvas is thin and that neighbours and rain are audible. No mattress, linen or cleaning chemistry is published.

What this property publishes, area by area

All eight areas, for every record. Each row opens to what was published, where we read it and when.

Publishing something is not the same as it being good. Every line below was read and placed by a person, not scored by a machine. What each rung means

Named means the property published something you can look up: a brand, a product or a number. Stated means it says so with nothing behind it. Not published means we looked and found nothing, which is a gap in our reading and not an answer about the building.

Air Ecology1 source notePublished or supplied

The air in a closed room is what you breathe for eight hours. What decides it is the filter grade, the fresh air rate, and whether damp has ever been looked for.

A review of a stay describes how the tent windows open, by unzipping an inner canvas curtain or an outer mosquito net, which is the only published description of how outside air enters a tent. No ventilation rate, filter grade or air measurement accompanies it.

Published by Once In A Lifetime Journey, read 17 Aug 2026.

Read it: Review of the Capella Ubud, Bali's luxury tented lodge
In their words

Windows can be open like safari tents, unzipping the inner canvas curtain or the outer mosquito net.

What to ask them
  • What filter grade is fitted to guest room air handling, for example MERV 13 or HEPA H13?
  • What is the fresh air supply rate per person in a guest room?
  • Are carbon dioxide, particulate or volatile organic compound levels measured, and are the readings published?
  • Is there a mould inspection and remediation protocol, and when was it last run?
  • Are there gas cooktops, fireplaces or other combustion sources inside guest rooms?
Water Integrity2 source notesPublished or supplied

You drink it, cook with it and stand under it. What is in it depends on the source and on what, if anything, filters it, and both are things a property can name.

Capella's own EarthCheck Gold announcement of 12 December 2024, reproduced in trade press, names BioSystem as the supplier of an on site bottling plant that produces drinking water in glass bottles by nano membrane ultrafiltration, and states it meets HACCP water quality standards. No test result, mineral profile or laboratory is named.

Published by Travel Turtle, read 17 Aug 2026.

Read it: World Environment Day 2025, 5 responsible travel experiences
In their words

A water bottling plant by BioSystem, designed to create purified drinking water in glass bottles using the Nano Membrane Ultra-filtration Technology, which meets Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Water Quality Standards.

General press describes the main pool and the private pool at every tent as saltwater. No sanitation system, chlorine generator, dosing method or published chemistry accompanies the description.

Read it: Go Chemical-Free At These 5 Resorts With Stunning Saltwater Swimming Pools
In their words

Not only does this hotel have a 65-foot saltwater pool, dubbed "The Cistern," but every tent also comes with its own private saltwater pool.

What to ask them
  • What is the water source, and what treatment is applied before it reaches a guest room?
  • Is there a published contaminant test panel, and which laboratory ran it?
  • Is shower and bath water filtered, and to what specification?
  • How are pools and spas sanitised, and is the chemistry published?
  • How is drinking water delivered, and is it treated on site?
Light Rhythm1 source notePublished or supplied

Light is what tells a body the time of day. The part a building controls is what its fittings emit and when, which a named product or a colour temperature makes checkable.

A review published in August 2025 describes the tent curtains as triple layered with a blackout layer, which is the only published account of blackout provision in the sleeping area. No fabric, product, opacity rating or supplier is named.

Published by This Is Luxury Travel, read 17 Aug 2026.

Read it: Capella Ubud Review (2026): Is the Bali Tent Camp Worth It?
In their words

Curtains throughout the tent are triple-layered (mesh, blackout, and decorative), maintaining privacy while reminding you that yes, you are in a tent.

What to ask them
  • Is guest room lighting tunable or circadian, and what specification is published?
  • What colour temperatures are used in the evening, and are fixtures flicker free?
  • Do sleeping areas have full blackout, and is it specified?
  • What daylight access does a typical room have?
  • Is exterior lighting shielded or reduced overnight?
EMF HarmonyNo evidence recordedNothing found yet

Wiring, routers and devices put electromagnetic fields in a room. What a building decides is where they sit relative to the bed, and whether anyone has measured it.

We found nothing published on this. That is a gap in what we could read, not a finding about the building.

What to ask them
  • Are guest rooms wired for data, or is access wireless only?
  • Where are wireless access points and smart meters placed relative to the bed?
  • Have field levels been measured in sleeping areas, and by whom?
  • Can a guest have wireless disabled in their room on request?
  • Is any shielded cabling or shielding material specified in the build?
Materials and Textiles3 source notesPublished or supplied

The things you sleep on and touch: the mattress, the sheets, the pillows, and the paints, glues and finishes around them. A named fabric, a fibre content or a certification can be looked up. A structural palette tells you about the building, not about the bed.

The property's accommodation page names Bamford as the brand of the bathroom toiletries provided in the tents, in a guest services list. No formulation, ingredient list or certification is published.

Bamford bathroom toiletries and a bar soap menu.

The architect publishes teak as the floor timber in every tent, made by hand in Central Java. No finish, sealant, adhesive or emission standard is published for it.

Published by BENSLEY, read 17 Aug 2026.

Read it: Capella Ubud
In their words

The teak floors in each tent were handmade in Central Java, and will last decades and decades.

The property publishes that every one-bedroom tent has a copper bathtub and indoor and outdoor showers. No supplier, lining, coating or finish is named for the bathtub.

One-Bedroom Keliki Tents feature heated private pools offering valley views, outdoor decks featuring daybeds, a copper bathtub, and both indoor and outdoor showers, along with curated guest amenities.

What to ask them
  • What are the mattresses made of, and are they treated with flame retardants?
  • What is the fibre content of the linen, and is it certified, for example to GOTS or OEKO TEX?
  • Which paints, adhesives and sealants were specified, and are they low emission?
  • What cleaning and laundry products are used, and is the list published?
  • Are there named low emission certifications on the flooring or joinery?
Food and Kitchen3 source notesPublished or supplied

What a kitchen cooks with and where it buys are the parts of a stay you take inside you. A named oil, a named supplier or a published share is checkable; “healthy” is not.

The property's own announcement of 11 November 2025 names the rice served at Api Jiwa as heritage Mansur rice, grown by permaculture methods at Begawan village six kilometres from the camp. No share of the menu, volume or third party verification accompanies it.

Chef Arvie's Shortrib Bossam is served with seasonal organic vegetable pickles and heritage Mansur rice, cultivated using time-honoured permaculture farming methods from Begawan village, just six kilometres from the camp.

The same announcement names the cooking method used at Api Jiwa and its fuel: Warayaki, a Japanese straw grilling technique, fired with surplus rice straw collected from the surrounding paddy fields. The method covers one of the camp's restaurants rather than the whole kitchen operation.

What to ask them
  • What share of produce is grown on site or sourced locally, and is it verified?
  • Which cooking oils are used, and is the policy published?
  • What cookware is used in the kitchen?
  • Is kitchen and ice water filtered, and to what specification?
  • Is there a published position on additives, preservatives or allergens?
Biophilic and Healing Design4 source notesPublished or supplied

Daylight, planting, outlook and the way a room meets the outside are what make a place feel the way it does. Named design decisions can be checked; atmosphere cannot.

The architect publishes the method used to position every tent on the site: full size bamboo mockups were built on site to set each tent against the existing trees and views before construction.

Published by BENSLEY, read 17 Aug 2026.

Read it: Capella Ubud
In their words

This was facilitated with on-site bamboo mockups of each tent, to ensure the existing environment was preserved – and to find the best jungle views.

The architect publishes the siting intent for the camp, that the brief was reduced in scale so that no tree was cut during construction. No survey, arborist or tree schedule is named.

Published by BENSLEY, read 17 Aug 2026.

Read it: Capella Ubud
In their words

The project was scaled down to and the priority became to keep every tree: not a single one was cut down during construction.

A first look report published in November 2018 describes the tents as built around palm and banyan trees and in some cases incorporating them. The four hectare site area in the same sentence is a land measurement and is not scored.

Read it: First Look: Designer Bill Bensley's New Tented Camp In Bali
In their words

Spreading out across four hectares, no trees were harmed, instead, the tents were constructed around palm and banyan trees, and sometimes incorporate them.

The property publishes that each one-bedroom tent has direct outdoor access through a private deck and pool with a forest or valley outlook. No ceiling height, volume or planting palette is published.

One-Bedroom Forest Tents feature plunge pools with lush panoramas, outdoor decks with daybeds, a copper bathtub, indoor and outdoor showers, and curated guest amenities.

What to ask them
  • Does every guest room have direct outdoor access or an operable opening?
  • What is the published design intent behind the natural materials used?
  • What are the typical ceiling heights and room volumes?
  • Was the landscape designed with native planting, and is the palette published?
Sound and Sensory Ecology2 source notesPublished or supplied

What you can hear at three in the morning decides whether you slept. Insulation, plant and machinery, and what sits next door are what decide it.

The property publishes that guests sleep inside canvas walls through which outside sound is audible. No background noise level, acoustic separation figure or wall specification accompanies it.

In their words

As a guest of Capella Ubud, Bali, your experience includes sleeping inside canvas walls which allow you to hear the sounds of nature from dusk till dawn.

A review published in August 2025 reports that the tent canvas gives no insulation and that neighbours and rain are audible inside the tent. It is an account of a stay, with no measurement and no acoustic specification.

Published by This Is Luxury Travel, read 17 Aug 2026.

Read it: Capella Ubud Review (2026): Is the Bali Tent Camp Worth It?
In their words

The tent canvas is thin, offering no real insulation.

What to ask them
  • What is the measured background noise level in a guest room at night?
  • What acoustic separation is specified between adjoining keys?
  • How loud is the guest room air conditioning at its lowest setting?
  • Is fragrance diffused into guest rooms or public areas, and can it be declined?

Not everything is published, and an empty row is a gap in what we could read rather than a fault in the building. If one of these matters to you, ask the property before you book. Send us something that updates this record
