Six bungalows at 700 metres on the southern slope of Mount Batukaru, in the same fold of Tabanan as Bali Eco Stay, whose founders learned the trade here. Norm and Linda vant Hoff built the first house in 1990 as a family getaway and have been adding to it, slowly and by hand, ever since. It is a small place and it publishes a long list, which is the right way round. The list is below, sorted into what is named and what is not.

The bungalows
Six, each different, built by village carpenters from timbers the property names: bamboo grown on site, coffee, coconut and jackfruit. Floors are local terracotta tile. There is no air conditioning anywhere, because at this height there is no need, and the rooms are made to be slept in with the windows open. The Tree House, the original house, has two bedrooms each with its own lounge, an indoor garden bathroom and a bamboo bed on a timber floor. The mattresses come from Nornnorn, a subscription supplier that takes them back for recycling. A named species and a named supplier both reach the specified tier. What is not named is what the bed is filled with and what the timber is finished with, apart from the tung oil on the yoga bale floor.
Water
Drinking water and shower water are mountain spring water, and nothing else. The swimming pool is a natural living pool the owners designed themselves, filtered by plants and run without chemicals, with a shallow beach entry and small fish in it. Every drain on the property runs to vegetated leach fields. That is a complete water story with no numbers in it: no filter, no panel for a bungalow tap, no chemistry for the pool. One laboratory result would move this pathway to measured.
The kitchen
More than 150 edible and medicinal plants in the gardens, fed with the property's own seaweed concentrate, manure, biochar and ash, supply the vegetables, herbs and spices. Coffee comes from the owners' son's garden down the road. The staff take your order in the morning and spend the day harvesting and cooking it, with no microwave in the building. No beef, by policy; probiotic chicken, line caught fish and hormone free bacon for those who want them. Palm oil is excluded. The oil that replaces it is not named, and no share of the kitchen's supply is published, which is what keeps food at specified rather than measured.
Light, quiet and the badge
Skylights and glass roof tiles bring daylight in, LED lamps light the rooms after dark and rechargeable torches take you along the paths. No colour temperature or blackout provision is published. Wi-Fi lives in the restaurant and goes off at nine; the two budget bungalows have none, and the other four are not stated. The wood fired steam sauna and the pizza oven are the only machinery, and neither is near the beds by description. Eco Tourism Bali lists the lodge with a Gold Eco Climate Badge. It is recorded here and it changes no score, because it grades the business and this index grades the room.
