Ten bedrooms in a two-storey timber and galvanised steel building on 22 acres of rainforest at Ewingsdale, a few minutes inland from Byron Bay. Soma was built by Vedic meditation teacher Gary Gorrow with his brother George and Balinese architect Rieky Sunur, and it now runs its retreats in partnership with Lorna Jane. The defining move is glass. Floor-to-ceiling walls of it frame the rainforest from every communal space, so daylight and outlook are the architecture rather than a feature of it. No ventilation rate, filtration grade or air measurement is published for the sealed, glazed interiors. The pool is described as freshwater with no treatment method or test panel behind the word. Daylight is clearly a design principle, but no artificial lighting specification, colour temperature or blackout provision is published. Nothing is published on wireless topology or the electromagnetic environment, in either direction. The structural materials are named while the finishes that touch skin are not: no mattress composition, no textile certification, no cleaning chemistry.
