A closer look at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova

Malhadinha Nova is 744 hectares of Baixo Alentejo that the Soares family bought in 1998 and planted, with thirty rooms spread across six houses on it. The food record is the strongest thing here and it is specific: wine, olive oil, honey, Barbela wheat, Alentejo cattle, white and black Merino sheep and black pig, all under protected designation of origin, with vegetables and fruit from gardens and orchards restored on the estate. Eighty hectares of vineyard have been in organic production since 2019. The restaurant holds a MICHELIN Green Star for sustainable gastronomy and the estate itself is a certified B Corporation with a published impact score. Very few properties in this index can name a breed, a wheat variety and a conversion year on the same page.

The interiors are listed rather than described: handmade chairs, willow and stones collected on the estate, regional marble, Agape bathroom fittings, lighting by Starck, Eames and Fortuny. That is what Materials and Textiles asks for, a record of what a guest touches. The M Wellness Spa is 110 square metres by Aires Mateus, holding a sensory shower, three treatment rooms and a sauna, with facial treatments using the Azorean brand IGNAE and body treatments built on the estate's own wine, honey and rosemary. The land practice behind all of it is published as organic and extensive, with human intervention deliberately kept low.

What this property publishes, area by area

All eight areas, for every record. Each row opens to what was published, where we read it and when.

Publishing something is not the same as it being good. Every line below was read and placed by a person, not scored by a machine. What each rung means

Named means the property published something you can look up: a brand, a product or a number. Stated means it says so with nothing behind it. Not published means we looked and found nothing, which is a gap in our reading and not an answer about the building.

Air EcologyNo evidence recordedNothing found yet

The air in a closed room is what you breathe for eight hours. What decides it is the filter grade, the fresh air rate, and whether damp has ever been looked for.

We found nothing published on this. That is a gap in what we could read, not a finding about the building.

What to ask them
  • What filter grade is fitted to guest room air handling, for example MERV 13 or HEPA H13?
  • What is the fresh air supply rate per person in a guest room?
  • Are carbon dioxide, particulate or volatile organic compound levels measured, and are the readings published?
  • Is there a mould inspection and remediation protocol, and when was it last run?
  • Are there gas cooktops, fireplaces or other combustion sources inside guest rooms?
Water IntegrityNo evidence recordedNothing found yet

You drink it, cook with it and stand under it. What is in it depends on the source and on what, if anything, filters it, and both are things a property can name.

We found nothing published on this. That is a gap in what we could read, not a finding about the building.

What to ask them
  • What is the water source, and what treatment is applied before it reaches a guest room?
  • Is there a published contaminant test panel, and which laboratory ran it?
  • Is shower and bath water filtered, and to what specification?
  • How are pools and spas sanitised, and is the chemistry published?
  • How is drinking water delivered, and is it treated on site?
Light RhythmNo evidence recordedNothing found yet

Light is what tells a body the time of day. The part a building controls is what its fittings emit and when, which a named product or a colour temperature makes checkable.

We found nothing published on this. That is a gap in what we could read, not a finding about the building.

What to ask them
  • Is guest room lighting tunable or circadian, and what specification is published?
  • What colour temperatures are used in the evening, and are fixtures flicker free?
  • Do sleeping areas have full blackout, and is it specified?
  • What daylight access does a typical room have?
  • Is exterior lighting shielded or reduced overnight?
EMF HarmonyNo evidence recordedNothing found yet

Wiring, routers and devices put electromagnetic fields in a room. What a building decides is where they sit relative to the bed, and whether anyone has measured it.

We found nothing published on this. That is a gap in what we could read, not a finding about the building.

What to ask them
  • Are guest rooms wired for data, or is access wireless only?
  • Where are wireless access points and smart meters placed relative to the bed?
  • Have field levels been measured in sleeping areas, and by whom?
  • Can a guest have wireless disabled in their room on request?
  • Is any shielded cabling or shielding material specified in the build?
Materials and Textiles2 source notesPublished or supplied

The things you sleep on and touch: the mattress, the sheets, the pillows, and the paints, glues and finishes around them. A named fabric, a fibre content or a certification can be looked up. A structural palette tells you about the building, not about the bed.

The interiors are itemised by material and by maker: handmade chairs, willow and stone gathered on the estate, regional marble, and named furniture and lighting houses alongside them.

Published by Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, read 19 Aug 2026.

Read it: Concept
In their words

The rural inspiration is evident in the original objects designed by artisans – the handmade chairs, the use of willow and stones collected on the estate, and the local regional marble – which coexist alongside Portuguese and international designer objects by Olaio, Vista Alegre, Marcel Wanders and Alvar Aalto

The spa's product lines are named rather than described: facial treatments use the Azorean brand IGNAE, and body treatments are built on wine, honey and rosemary produced on the estate.

Published by Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, read 19 Aug 2026.

Read it: M Wellness Spa
In their words

The treatments at the new M Wellness Spa are divided into IGNAE experiences, focused on specific facial products; and body treatments using wine, honey and rosemary, three primary ingredients of Herdade da Malhadinha Nova.

What to ask them
  • What are the mattresses made of, and are they treated with flame retardants?
  • What is the fibre content of the linen, and is it certified, for example to GOTS or OEKO TEX?
  • Which paints, adhesives and sealants were specified, and are they low emission?
  • What cleaning and laundry products are used, and is the list published?
  • Are there named low emission certifications on the flooring or joinery?
Food and Kitchen4 source notesPublished or supplied

What a kitchen cooks with and where it buys are the parts of a stay you take inside you. A named oil, a named supplier or a published share is checkable; “healthy” is not.

The kitchen's supply is itemised by product and by breed, all from the estate's own 744 hectares: wine, olive oil, honey, Barbela wheat, Alentejo cattle, white and black Merino sheep and black pig, each under protected designation of origin, with vegetables and fruit from restored gardens and orchards.

Read it: Restaurant
In their words

The organic and self-suficient production is now a reality on the estate's 744 hectares. Our restaurant serves wines, olive oil and honey, Barbela wheat, the Alentejo cow, white and black Merina sheep and the black pig, all with PDO protected designations of origin, and vegetables and fruit from the gardens and orchards that have been restored on the estate.

The vineyard is published with its area and the year it converted: 80 hectares in organic production since 2019.

Published by Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, read 19 Aug 2026.

Read it: Quality and Sustainability Policy
In their words

Herdade da Malhadinha Nova aims to produce high quality Alentejo wines from its 80 ha of vineyards, which have been under organic production since 2019, respecting the highest quality standards and reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.

An independent guide records the chef's own account of the estate's sourcing: waste, water and energy managed on site, with olive oil, honey and vegetables produced there and native breeds raised on the land.

Published by MICHELIN Guide, read 19 Aug 2026.

Read it: Malhadinha Nova, Albernoa
In their words

We try to keep the traditions of the Alentejo alive and respect its ecosystem through measures such as the management of our waste, water and energy. We also produce our own olive oil, honey and vegetables and raise native breeds in harmony with our natural environment.

A third party publisher records the restaurant as run on local and mostly organic products grown on the property, with the spa built on the same estate ingredients.

Published by Girls Who Eat, Non-Toxic Travel Made Simple, read 19 Aug 2026.

Read it: Farm-to-Table Hotel Stays That Aren't Just a Marketing Claim
In their words

This 30-room estate runs its own on-site restaurant on local and mostly organic products grown right on the property, using vegetables and fruit from its own gardens and orchards alongside wine, olive oil, honey, and cereals all produced on the estate.

What to ask them
  • What share of produce is grown on site or sourced locally, and is it verified?
  • Which cooking oils are used, and is the policy published?
  • What cookware is used in the kitchen?
  • Is kitchen and ice water filtered, and to what specification?
  • Is there a published position on additives, preservatives or allergens?
Biophilic and Healing Design3 source notesPublished or supplied

Daylight, planting, outlook and the way a room meets the outside are what make a place feel the way it does. Named design decisions can be checked; atmosphere cannot.

The estate publishes its land practice as the governing decision: organic, sustainable and extensive agriculture across the property with human intervention deliberately minimised, and native livestock breeds kept in the same system.

Published by Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, read 19 Aug 2026.

Read it: Relais & Chateaux
In their words

With human action reduced to a minimum, is practiced organic, sustainable and extensive agriculture.

The spa is attributed to a named studio, Aires Mateus, and published with its area and its rooms: 110 square metres holding a sensory shower, three treatment rooms and a sauna, with the interior colour taken from the flora of the property.

Published by Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, read 19 Aug 2026.

Read it: M Wellness Spa
In their words

Minimal, timeless and immersive. These are just a few adjectives that define the new wellness space at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, projected by Aires Mateus studio and carrying exclusive facial treatments in Alentejo by the Azores-born brand IGNAE.

The accommodation is described as separate houses fitted into the landscape rather than one block, each with its own terraces and pools looking over the Alentejo plain.

Published by Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, read 19 Aug 2026.

Read it: Accommodations
In their words

Perfectly integrated into the landscape, Herdade da Malhadinha Nova has five guest accommodations, They portray the various chapters in the history of this family-style project built around wine.

What to ask them
  • Does every guest room have direct outdoor access or an operable opening?
  • What is the published design intent behind the natural materials used?
  • What are the typical ceiling heights and room volumes?
  • Was the landscape designed with native planting, and is the palette published?
Sound and Sensory EcologyNo evidence recordedNothing found yet

What you can hear at three in the morning decides whether you slept. Insulation, plant and machinery, and what sits next door are what decide it.

We found nothing published on this. That is a gap in what we could read, not a finding about the building.

What to ask them
  • What is the measured background noise level in a guest room at night?
  • What acoustic separation is specified between adjoining keys?
  • How loud is the guest room air conditioning at its lowest setting?
  • Is fragrance diffused into guest rooms or public areas, and can it be declined?

Not everything is published, and an empty row is a gap in what we could read rather than a fault in the building. If one of these matters to you, ask the property before you book. Send us something that updates this record

Feature sources and certification records show their own scope and dates.

Compare what each stay offers, how it was checked and what still needs confirming. Assessment labels describe the review, not an overall quality rating.

A low score means a property has not published information. It does not mean the property is unsafe, unhealthy or poorly run.

These scores describe disclosure, not property quality. Listings are free, and any commercial relationship is disclosed.
