Eight open sided bungalows in a valley on the southern slopes of Mount Batukaru, about 450 metres up, an hour and a half from Ubud. Bali Eco Stay is a small family run place, founded by Cath and John Blundstone with the landowning family who still host it, and it publishes the things this index looks for more plainly than most resorts ten times its size. Water from a spring. Food from the land around the bungalows. Electricity from the river. The gaps are just as plain, and they are named below.

Read the rest of the description

The bungalows

There is no air conditioning here and no fans, because the bungalows are open on their sides and the mountain air is five to ten degrees cooler than the coast. Adjustable bamboo blinds are what stands between the bed and the rice paddies. That is the whole ventilation strategy, and for a guest room it is a real one: air that changes on its own has no filter to clog and no duct to grow mould in. What is not published is the air itself. No outdoor air reading, no mould protocol. The bed is dressed in bamboo sheets under a mosquito net, with a comforter for the cool nights. Bamboo is a fibre class rather than a named textile, so it sits at the claimed tier until the sheets have a maker.

Water

The taps, the showers and a dispenser in every bungalow all carry filtered spring water from Mount Batukaru, and the property holds a no plastic bottle rule to match. A named spring source is the second of the two routes this index accepts on water, so the pathway reaches the specified tier on the source alone. The filtration behind the word filtered is not named, and no panel has been published for the water arriving at a bungalow tap. Each toilet and shower drains to its own septic tank and a planted wastewater garden of ornamental ginger, which is good practice and is recorded, and which says nothing about what a guest drinks.

The kitchen

The property says three quarters of its restaurant food comes off its own land, and it publishes the land: a permaculture food garden with the crops listed by name, heritage rice grown without hybrid seed or chemical fertiliser, free range chickens working the compost, vanilla and cacao in the volcanic soil, palm sugar harvested on site. Chicken and freshwater fish come from local organic farms it does not name. Cage free eggs from November 2025. What keeps this at the specified tier is the denominator: a percentage the property reports about itself is not a purchasing record or an audit. Nothing is published about cooking oil, cookware or plastics in the kitchen. A morning tour of the gardens leaves at half past nine.

What is not here

Wi-Fi is listed in every bungalow, and nothing is published on managing it overnight, so EMF scores zero rather than being credited for remoteness. No lighting figure, no blackout provision, no acoustic measure. The valley is quiet because there is no traffic in it, which is a condition rather than a design, and it is recorded without a score. A hydroelectric generator on the river supplies nearly 70 per cent of the electricity, with standby generators whose location is not published. A property this specific about its farm and its water is a few named products and one water panel away from a very different total.

Bali Eco Stay at a glance

Bali Eco Stay is a stay in Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia. We read what it publishes about the eight things a building does to your biology and scored the evidence 11 of 24. Last verified 2026-09-06. Air Ecology is its best-documented pathway; nothing is published on EMF Harmony.

The marker sheet

Eight building-biology pathways, each graded by the strength of its evidence. How grading works

  1. 0Nothing publishedNot publishedWe looked. They have published nothing about this.
  2. 1Their word for itClaimedThey say so, and name nothing behind it.
  3. 2Named and specificSpecifiedThey name the actual system, product, supplier or standard.
  4. 3Tested or verifiedMeasuredA published test result, a laboratory report, or an independent check: a certification body, or our own assessor on site.

Each of the 8 pathways scores 0 to 3, so 24 is the most any property can reach. Out of 24, because 8 of 8 pathways have been assessed. Unassessed pathways leave the denominator rather than counting as zero.

What is published, and where it came from

  • Specified

The eight bungalows are published as open air structures with no air conditioning and no fans, cooled by the mountain air at about 450 metres. That is a stated ventilation route for the room a guest sleeps in, with no outdoor air reading, filter or air change figure alongside it.

The open-air structures of the Bali huts over water provide a natural cooling system, enabling the bungalows to remain at a comfortable temperature throughout the day and night. No air-conditioning or fans are needed as these overwater bungalows Indonesia are 5 to 10 degrees cooler in the mountains than the coastal areas of Bali.

What the record was built from

Every source behind this record, with the date we read it. You can open each one and check the grade against it yourself, which is the only reason to trust a grade at all.

What is not published

Nothing on this record is a reading. Bali Eco Stay publishes its water source, its farm and its energy in more detail than most small properties in this index, and every one of those is a description rather than a measurement. On water, the spring on Mount Batukaru is named and the filtration is not: no filter, no chemistry panel and no test result for the water reaching the bungalows. On air, the bungalows are open sided with no air conditioning, which is a ventilation route, and nothing is published on the outdoor air, on mould or on where the standby generators sit. On light, nothing is published beyond bamboo blinds: no lighting product, no blackout, no colour temperature. On EMF, Wi-Fi is listed in the amenities of every bungalow, and nothing is published on how it is managed at night, where the access points sit or whether it can be switched off, so the pathway scores zero. On materials, the sheets are a fibre class, the toiletries are unbranded and the building materials are called local without a species or supplier; the cleaning chemistry is the one thing named. On food, the 75 per cent figure is the property's own, with no purchasing records behind it, and no cooking oil, cookware or plastics statement exists on the site. On sound, the setting is described as free of traffic and city noise, which is a condition of the valley and not an acoustic provision, so it is recorded here and not scored. No architect or designer is named for the bungalows anywhere read, and no design press article was found.

Not published is not unsafehow to read these scores, and what this index does not promise

A low score means a property has not published information. It does not mean the property is unsafe, unhealthy or poorly run.

These scores measure disclosure. These scores describe disclosure, not property quality. This index has no commercial relationship with the properties listed unless a badge on the listing says otherwise.

Conditions change, and we will not always know. Every record is a snapshot of what a property had published when we read it, and that date is on the page. Conditions change: a property can refit, change suppliers or replace a system at any time, and nothing requires it to tell us. We re-read records and ask properties directly for updates, but there will always be a gap between what is true today and what was published when we looked. Use this as a frame of reference for what to ask, not as a substitute for asking. Take your own questions to the property before you book, and tell us if you find something we have wrong.

We report what properties publish. We do not inspect, certify or vouch for any property on this index unless a listing says we assessed it on site, and we accept no responsibility for decisions made or outcomes experienced on the basis of what you read here.

Right of reply. Anyone can correct this record at corrections@verifiedwellnessspaces.com. The property scored here answers at reply@verifiedwellnessspaces.com. Every change is logged on the changelog with the date and the reason, including when the change is ours.
