Most hotels tell you what they put in. This one is known for what it left out.
Twenty-four houses sit on the Sayan Ridge above the Ayung river at Ubud, run by the Hardy family with the design studio Ibuku. They are restored antique teak homes from Java and new structures in locally sourced bamboo. The property publishes that cement, plastic and chemicals were excluded from the construction, and that most of the houses have open-air bathrooms. Only a handful have walls.
Why a house with no walls is the point
An open house cannot hide its plant. There is no sealed envelope between a bed and the outside air, so there is nothing to filter and nothing to fail. Where air conditioning exists at all, the property publishes that it is delivered into the mosquito net over the bed rather than into the whole room.
Lighting is published as candlelight, LEDs and oil lamps, with no fluorescent lamps. The path lamps run on used cooking oil. The bamboo is treated with a boron solution, which Ibuku publishes by name.
What the assessment found
Jordan Lineham assessed Bambu Indah on site for Certified Spaces on 18 August 2026.
The houses were seen to be open sided or cross ventilated throughout. Spring water was found supplying the whole property, with drinking water from every tap. After dark the lighting was warm and low, and daylight reached every sleeping space. Antique teak, structural bamboo, natural fibre textiles and mineral finishes ran through the guest spaces. There was no amplified music anywhere on the site, and because the houses are indoor-outdoor the Ayung river stays audible from the beds.
Four confirmations followed. On 8 September 2026 Human Garage recorded that the natural swimming pools use unfiltered spring water and one separate ridge-top pool is salt chlorinated, that natural cleaning products are used throughout, and that the property grows organic produce on its own farm. On 10 September it recorded reverse osmosis on the tap water and copper in the storage tanks. On 18 September it recorded that the cookware is copper.
None of that is a laboratory result. No drinking-water panel is published, and the organic share of the kitchen is not quantified. Sound and the wireless environment are not subjects the property publishes at all, so those rows rest on the visit alone.
Certified Spaces knows the owners and counts Bambu Indah as a client. That is disclosed on every claim it supports.
