About Mana Earthly Paradise
Six earthbag domes in the rice fields of Sayan, on the edge of Ubud, run by a Japanese and Balinese NGO called Earth Company, whose profit from your stay funds its work elsewhere in the Pacific. Mana opened in 2019 and became the first B Corp certified hotel in Southeast Asia in October 2022. That certification is real and it is recorded here in its own row, and it does not move a single pathway score: B Lab measures a business, and this index measures a building. What follows is what the building publishes about itself.

The villas
The walls are earthbags: long bags filled with earth and sand, stacked and rendered. The property publishes the method, Earth Company publishes the fill, and both say why it matters for a guest: the mass is slow to warm and slow to cool, so the rooms hold their temperature without air conditioning. There is none, by choice, and no television either. The timber is reclaimed, with no tree felled on site. What a guest sleeps on is a rented mattress under a seven year contract, with the supplier committed to recycling at least 90 per cent of it afterwards; the supplier, nornnorn, names the project on its own site. That is a named arrangement, which reaches the specified tier. The filling is not named, which is what keeps it there.
Water
There is no well and no mains here. The roofs catch rain, and the property publishes that it filters and treats it to drinking quality before piping it through the site, so the tap is drinkable. Everything that drains from the kitchen, the showers and the toilets goes to planted wastewater gardens built to work like a wetland, then back onto the plantings. The whole cycle is published, and no part of it is measured: the filter and the treatment have no name and no panel. One laboratory result for a villa tap would change this pathway.
The kitchen
Mana Kitchen is a Japanese and Indonesian menu built by an Okinawan macrobiotic cook, Yasuhiro Higa, around miso, shio koji and amazake, and around heirloom vegetables from the permaculture garden that guests can pick in the morning. The kitchen publishes what it works to exclude: pesticides, MSG, GMO and F1 seed, imported ingredients, microwaves, unsustainable red meat. An exclusion list is a promise, not a measurement, and this one says nothing about cooking oil. A named garden lifts the pathway to specified; a purchasing record would lift it further.
What is not here
